New Ulm HALL OF FAME Member
John Woebke Sr.
Non-Player (Support)
Selected 1994
John Woebke Sr. earned his
nomination into the New Ulm Baseball Hall of Fame through his support of New Ulm amateur baseball over a 30-year span. Although
he was never a member
of the New Ulm Baseball Association (NUBA), Woebke put in as many hours as
any board member in support of the New Ulm baseball program from
the 1920's to 50's.
When the NUBA was formed in 1939,
Woebke was appointed official scorer for all home games. He held
this post until about 1950 and was known as a tough but well
respected scorer. John was also appointed to secure advertising and printing of
the scorecards during that period through a major fund-raising effort.
In addition to these duties, John also did a lot of
"behind-the-scenes work in obtaining state tournaments and in
securing ball players.
Prior to 1939, Woebke
served as editor of the
New Ulm Review and covered baseball in the 1920's when New Ulm had a
number of teams playing at the Brown County Fairgrounds.
He is best described as a person
who was
willing to help in the promotion of and working for whatever needed
to be done to make New Ulm amateur baseball the success it has been
and still is today.
