Mark Zeise
may not have been a high-average hitter, but he was noted as an
outstanding outfielder in high school, Legion and amateur
baseball in New Ulm.
One committee member noted, “Mark was a hustler and a hard worker. You never had to worry about Mark’s effort when he crossed the foul
line.”
When the
Brewers were short of pitching in 1976, Mark volunteered and pitched
in four games, doing an acceptable job even though he never pitched
previously in his baseball career. All he ever did was roam the
outfield far and wide to chase down fly balls and hits. Mark also
did play some at first base when needed.
Zeise, a
farm boy, played six years with the Brewers (1972-76 and 1978) and
four years with the Kaiserhoff (1969-71 and 1977).
Statistically, his best hitting year was his final one with a New
Ulm team: he batted .321 for the 1978 Brewers. He had some other
good batting seasons of .286, .279 and .299.
Career
highlights include a five-hit game against Trimont in 1973 and
several four-hit games in 1974. He played on the 1972 Brewers team
in the state tourney.
Zeise
played two years of baseball at NUHS and with the Legion, and he
later
played varsity baseball at Gustavus.
For many
years, Zeise has been the baseball coach at Lakeville High School and
often brought his teams to New Ulm to face his alma mater and former
coach Jim Senske in early season non-conference match-ups.
