3-21 - The Fischers at St. Cloud are having great starts to the baseball season with the 11-2 Huskies. Kyle is 4-1 with two complete games and opponent batting of only .170. Garrett is hitting .378 with 8 RBI and 4 SB. His error-less 93-chance fielding is the team leader. Zack Hoffmann is 4-1 with an RBI so far. St. Cloud plays a doubleheader in the Metrodome this weekend. Logan Ahlness has started every game in the infield for St. Paul Bethel although the Hanska native is hitting only .211. Kelsey Kannegeiser is won her only start for St. Thomas in spring games.

3-20 - Morgan continue her good hitting in Florida with a double in three AB in a 1-0 game in which there was only one other hit. No information on game three was available. Kevin Larson of Cathedral, finished playing in the national junior college tournament, as Iowa Lakes lost its second game. He had six points, a couple of steals, three rebounds and an assist.

3-17 - Zollner collected five hits in seven AB's the next day. Two were doubles.
3-16 - Morgan Zollner had a good opening series in Clermont, Fl. for Iowa Lakes community college She had three hits,one a double, a sacrifice bunt and three RBI's in two losses.

9-20 - Courteney Steinhauser (NUHS '09) has been playing a huge role in Minnesota State University's 2012 volleyball season. Courteney is a senior and has helped lead the Mav's to an 8-3 record and a #12 national ranking and just knocked off the #2 team in the country, Concordia, St. Paul. Courteney is second on the team in blocks and third on the team in kills.

In the win over Concordia Steinhauser had 10 kills and 3 blocks.

7-25 - Christrian Stewart of New Ulm High School has selected D3 Macalester College to play football starting next fall. At 6-2, 302 pounds, he was Eagle recipient of the school's captain and Offensive Lineman of the Year awards.

6-15 - Kelsy Kannegeisser is headed to St. Thomas where the New Ulm High School basketball/softball standout will concentrate on the diamond sport.

6-14 - Kyle Fischer of New Ulm and St. Cloud State University had a good outing in the Willmar Stinger's Northwoods game Thursday night according to a team release. He went 7-1/3 innings, striking out eight while only walking two. Fischer only allowed one earned run on six hits but did not factor into the decision because of a ninth inning comeback rally. Meanwhile brother Garrett has been helping out Mankato's team and awaiting a final decision on whether he will remain with the team for the season. He's seven for seven stolen base attempts.

5-30 - Today VanRoeckel was honored with selection to his second All-American squad, this time by the Baseball Coaches Association. That story is featured here in the center news column also.

5-29 - Nate VanRoeckel today was named to the third All-American team selected by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers of America. Details Here

5-28 - St Thomas has won their first two games in the DIII baseball NCAA championships in Appleton WI. They defeated Christopher Newport in their first game 12-7 and followed that up with a win against Marietta 3-1. NUC's Colling Wendinger did not enter either game.

5-26 - New Ulm and Winona State University graduate Nate VanRoeckel has accepted a job to be a mechanical design engineer at Itron in Waseca thus concluding an outstanding career with Winona as reported regularly by New Ulm Sports Central as part of this College Watch feature. Thank you Nate for your achievements.

5-22 - MLC baseball players Aaron Stokke and Jacob Ziel were named Honorable Mention All-UMAC Tuesday in a voting done by the coaches in the conference. More details available from the team website or the conference release

5-21 - The St Cloud Huskies' baseball season came to an end Sunday in the NCAA D II regional championship, losing to Minnesota State Mankato 5-4. Garrett Fischer (NUHS) went 1 for 5 with a double and 1 run scored. Garrett was one of 5 Huskies named to the Regional All Tournament Team. The Huskies end their season at 48-14. Mankato moves on to the D II world series in Gary, North Carolina and will hope to repeat or improve on Winona's 2011 feat of finishing second in the nation.

Garrett's final numbers for the year inclcude a .407 BA (1st on the team), 79 hits (1st), 20 doubles (2nd), three triples (1st), two HR's, 56 RS and 42 RBI. He had a .989 fielding % making only 1 error in 92 chances. He also had 19 stolen bases (2nd). Kyle Fischer's pitching record was 8-3 with an ERA of 2.21 (2nd) with three saves (tied 1st) and six complete games (1st). He struck out 64 batters in 77.1 innings and held opponents to a .242 batting average. Kyle had a 1.000 fielding % committing no errors in 25 chances.

St Thomas was a winner Sunday in their regional championship and now advances to the D III Baseball World Series in Appleton WI. The Tommies defeated UW-Whitewater 10-6 to advance. NUC's Colin Wendinger did not pitch in the title game, However, he did see action earlier in the regional.

5-20 - St Cloud continues their season today as it advanced to the NCAA D II regional championship with a pair of 4-2 victories Saturday, first defeating Regis 4-2 and then following with a 4-2 victory in a rematch with New Mexico Highlands. Garrett Fischer (NUHS) was 2 for 5 in the Regis game and 3 for 5 in the Highlands game. St Cloud will play Mankato today at noon at the Franklin Rogers park and will need to win two games in the double elimination tournament to advance to the NCAA D II World Series. 5-19 - Was it Regis where Ken Gartrell came from to pitch for the New Ulm Brewers (Western Minny AA ball)and then wound up at Gibbon (Class A ball which allowed an outside player? Herb recalls that he worked for Gambles here at Third North and Minnesota, but passed away early. Any verification?

5-19 - The St. Cloud Husky's baseball team let one slip away Friday night in the 2nd round of the NCAA D II Central Regional Tournament as New Mexico Highlands came from down 3-0 to beat the Husk's 5-4. Kyle Fischer (NUHS) took the loss for St. Cloud going all 8 innings. He allowed 5 runs, 3 earned, 6 hits, 3BB and had 7K's. Garrett Fischer (NUHS) was 2 for 5 with a stolen base. St. Cloud is still in the double elimination tournament and plays today at 3:30 against Regis.

Regis advanced with a thrilling 4-2 11 inning victory over Winona State earlier on Friday. Nate Van Roekel (NUHS) was 0 for 4 with 1 BB. He had six POs and two assists playing 2nd base for the final time in his career at Winona as he is a senior and recently graduated from Winona State. His final year stats include starting and playing in every game this year, a .352 batting average (3rd). His 12 HR's, 57 RS and 70 hits all lead the team. He added 14 doubles, 32 BB's and 8 stolen bases. He ranked in the top 10 in the conference in numerous offensive categories including slugging %, hits, runs scored, RBI's and his 12 HR's were second in the conference. Another great year for the New Ulm High School graduate.

St. Thomas won their 3rd game in the D III regional in Whitewater Wisconsin yesterday with a 22-2 pounding of St Scholastica. NUC's Colin Wendiger pitched one inning of relief for the Tommies, giving up one hit and 1BB in facing four batters in the inning. Colin and the Tommies are one win away from advancing to the D III college world series.

5-18 - In the first round of the Central Region tournament, St Cloud (2) faced off against Winona (5) with St Cloud winning a slug fest 12-7. NUHS graduate Nate Van Roekel was 3 for 6 with 1RBI and 1RS for Winona. One of his hits was a HR. Garrett Fischer was 3 for 3 with 1RBI and 2RS along with one double for the Huskies. St Cloud will play tomorrow evening at 7:00 at the Frank agains New Mexico Highlands and Winona will play against Regis college as well tomorrow. The current New Ulm High School team and coach Jay Backer made the trip to Mankato to watch the New Ulm High School grads playing for their current teams and then to pose for a picture with their ex teammates.

St Johns' season came to end at the Regional tournament in Oregon with a loss to Coe College 7-2. NUC's Aaron Pfaff started the game with a double and later scored on a HR to give the Johnnies a quick 2-0 lead. However they only managed 3 hits the rest of the game as Coe scored 7 unanswered runs for the victory. Pfaff ended the day 1 for 4 with 1 run scored. His final season stats include a .302 batting average, 28 runs scored, 13 RBI, 4 doubles and 2 triples. He added 10 stolen bases along with 20 BB's with lead the team. He only committed 1 error in 49 chances. An impressive year for the freshmen.

5-17 - St. John's lost their first game in the NCAA DIII Regional on the campus of Linfield College, 6-3 to Concordia Texas. NUC's Aaron Pfaff was 1 for 4 with 1 run scored. St Thomas defeated St Norbert 5-1 in their Regional mathup. Collin Wendinger did not enter the game.

5-15 - With the Central Region starting Thursday at Mankato, #1 Minnesota State-Mankato will play #6 Regis at 7 p.m. No. 2 St. Cloud State University plays Winona State (5) at 3:30 after the tournament opener betwen #3 Colorado Mesa and #4 New Mexico Highlands. The regional winner goes to the national Division 3 World Series. The region regional website is operational.

5-14 - The MIAC Baseball playoffs ended with a big upset for the St John's Johnnies. Needing to win one of two games to capture the MIAC playoff title away from defending champion and nationally ranked (#2) St Thomas, the Johnnies dropped the first game 6-3 which forced the "if necessary" game which the Johnnies won 10-5. The victory gives St Johns the automatic birth to the NCAA regional playoffs with St Thomas to wait to recieve an "at-large" invitation. In the first game NUC's Aaron Pfaff was 1 for 2 with the Johnnies first RBI of the game. He added a BB and HBP. In the second game Aaron was 0-2 with 2 runs scored, another BB and HBP, and a sacrifice bunt. In the second game Collin Wendinger (NUC) pitched the final two innings for St Thomas, giving up one 1 run on 1 hit with 1 BB. The ex-teammates faced each other with Collin getting Aaron to ground out to SS.

5-13 - The Rochester Yellowjackets entered the NJCAA Regional 13 tournament this weekend with a 21-21 record. After losing their first game to Riverland CC 6-1, they played all the way back to the championship, beating Riverland later 3-0, only to lose in the championship 8-3 to St Cloud TC and the chance to go to Tyler Texas for the JV world series. Colton Petron (NUlHS) picked up a tournament win against Dakota County going 6.1 innings, allowing 4 runs on 5 hits, 1BB and 9K's. Colton finished the year 6-3 in 41.1 innings, allowing 49 hits with 40K's and a 6.7 ERA.

The Ridgewater Warriors ended their season to Rochester the weekend of May 4-5 losing 2 of 3. Zach Fischer (NUC) ended the season hitting .305 with 3HR's, 13 RBI and 21 runs scored. Jason Shaul (NUHS) hit .346 with 1HR. His 22 RBI and 12 doubles lead the team, which ended the season with a 13-17 record.

5-12 - St Cloud State lost two games on Saturday afternoon to Mankato State 9-7 and 11-6. Mankato therefore won the NSIC conference tournament. In the first game Garrett Fischer (NUHS) hit a grand slam going 1 for 4. Kyle Fischer (NUHS) pitched 3 innings of relief giving up two runs on five hits in taking the loss. In the second game Garrett Fischer was 3 for 5 with two runs scored. Garrett's efforts earned him all-tournament team honors as he hit .409, in going 9 for 22 with 6 runs scored and 5 RBI. St Cloud waits to hear when they play next week in the NCAA DII regional.

In the MIAC playoffs, St Johns has won their first two games defeating Bethel 7-3 and then St Mary's 4-2. Aaron Pfaff was 2 for 4 in the Bethel game and 1 for 3 with a BB in the St Mary's game. St Johns now will play St Thomas on Sunday with St John's needing to win one of two games to capture the conference title and the automatic bid to the NCAA DIII regional tournament.

5-12 - Winona's run in the NSIC baseball conference tournament in Mankato came to an end Friday afternoon as Augustana defeated the Warriors 7-4. Nate Van Roekel was 1 for 4 with a single. Winona now waits to hear if they will be invited to the NCAA regional next week.

St Cloud State defeated Mankato on Friday 3-2. Kyle Fischer pitched 1 inning of relief to pick up his 3rd save of the year. Garrett Fischer was 0-5 hitting with 3k's.

5-11 - Nate Van Roekel, New Ulm High School graduate, was 2-3 and a big walk in the eighth but Winona lost to St. Cloud State 3-2 in the NSIC post-season tournament at Mankato Thursday. Martin Luther College tennis players Rachel Niemi, Scott Henrich, Paul Koester and Ben Nommensen were named to the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference all-conference tennis squad this week. 5-10 - The Iowa Lakes Softball team finished their season at the NJCAA Region XI tournament this past weekend in Fort Dodge. The Lakers received the 7 seed and in the opening round of play got matched up against the number 2 seed Kirkwood Community College. Unfortunately, Kirkwood was too much and the Lakers fell 10-1 in 6 innings. In the second round of the tournament Iowa Lakes was matched up against Ellsworth Community College, again a team the Lakers beat in the regular season, but they were not able to fight off the bats of the panthers; losing 9-2. Laura Holm went 2-3 from the plate to lead the Lakers, and Morgan Zollner added with some help going 2-4.

The Lakers end their season with a 11-31 record overall. Morgan finished the season hitting .371 with 8 doubles and 23 RBI aand 23 runs scored. Laura hit .240 with 6 doubles, 8 runs scored aand 17 RBI.

5-10 - St. Cloud State and Winona State faced off on Thursday in a NSIC tournment winners bracket game with St. Cloud escaping with a thrilling 3-2 victory. Nate Van Roekel of Winona was 2-3 with 1 run scored and Garrett Fischer extended his hitting streak to 10 games going 3-4 with a double, 1 run scored and 1 RBI. Winona had the potential tying run thrown out at home in a collision with the catcher in the bottom of the 8th ininng. Which allowed St. Cloud to hang on for the win in the 9th.

5-9 - St. Cloud State University and Winona State University won their first conference tournament games in the Northern Sun tournament Wednesday at Mankato. New Ulm's Garrett Fischer had key hits and scores and brother Kyle came on in the eighth to record his second save of the season. Garrett has hit safely in the last nine games. New Ulm's Van Roekel, batting lead-off, hit safely to start the second game with Winona playing Wayne State, won by Winona. He went hit-less in next four AB, one A K and had two errors at second base.

5-8 - Sports Bullet! Garrett Fisher of New Ulm has been selected as Player of the Week for the Northern Sun Conference, the second such honor won by a former New Ulm Eagle this year. Nate Van Roekel was named previously with Winona State University. See this article in detail in the center news column.

With the Northern Sun Conference post-season tournament opening Wednesday at Franklin Rogers field in Mankato, three New Ulm players were named Monday to the all-conference team. Kyle Fischer, St. Cloud pitcher, and Nate Van Roekel, Winona second basemen were first team selections. Garrett Fischer was given second team honors as an outfielder. St. Cloud plays at 12:30 and Winona at 3:30 Wednesday, May 9.

5-7 - Martin Luther College's Sarah Free today was named to the first team of the UMAC softball all-conference.

Baseball Update: Winona State finished off the regular season with Nate Van Roekel being one of the offensive leaders for Warriors and in the NSIC. He leads his team and conference with 11 HRs, his team with 50 RBI and a .640 slugging %. He is the top 10 in the conference in 8 offensive categories. All from the lead off spot in the lineup. Nate has had a terrific senior season and will play a big role this weekend in the conference playoffs in Mankato. Winona finishes the regular season 27-18, 22-12 in conference play. Good enough for 5th place and are currently ranked 7th in the region.

St Cloud State, also in the NSIC, is riding a 15-game winning streak putting themselves in 2nd place in the conference and a 3rd place ranking in the region and top 15 in the nation with a 40-10 overall record, 24-6 in conference. Kyle and Garrett Fischer have been major contributors to the Husky success. Garrett is currently hitting .380 (2nd on the team) with 16 doubles (1st) three triples (1st) and a .556 slugging % (3rd). He has 13 stolen bases and five assists from the outfield. His offensive numbers have him the top 10 in the conference in six different categories.

Kyle is 8-1 on the hill with a 1.87 ERA (2nd on the team) allowing opponents a .230 BA. He has stuck out 54 batters and allowed only 13 earned runs in 62.2 innings pitched. He is in the top 10 in the conference in numerous pitching categories including leading the conference in conference games only with a ERA of 1.35.

The State Cloud pitching staff just accomplished something never done before in NCAA history as Login Birr (St Cloud) and Scott Lieser (Browerville) pitched back-to-back no-hitters in the same day.

Onto the MIAC where Aaron Pfaff and the St Johns Johnnies have had another nice season. St John's has guaranteed themselves a playoff spot with a 2nd place finish in the conference with one weekend to go. The Johnnies are 25-12 and 13-5 in conference. Aaron is hitting at a .290 clip with 10 stolen bases and a .971 fielding %. Aaron's fellow classmate Collin Wendinger at St Thomas recently saw action again where he threw one inning of scoreless relief in the Tommys win over Concordia Moorhead. Collin has made four relief appearances on the year with 3.2 innings, giving up two earned runs while not allowing a hit. The Tommies are having another fantastic season at 30-5 and ranked second in the nation.

4-28 - Catching up on womens softball: Katie Larson at U of Sioux Falls continues to do well playing SS and batting in the lead off position. She is currently hitting .235 and has not committed and error in her last nine games. Trisha Johnson is now 7-5 with and 3.83 ERA pitching for St Ben's. She recently pitched a three-hitter against Augsburg allowing one run and also picked up another win against Concordia. She only allowed three earned runs.

Teammates Laura Holm and Morgan Zolner continue to help the Iowa Lakes softball team. Zollner is one of the teams leading hitters with a .383 BA with Holm hitting .235. Hayley Hornick has had a hot bat for the Central Lakes softball team. In the last 10 games she is hitting .500 going 21 for 41 with 14 RBI and 4 2Bs. Her ex-teammate at NUC is 5-5 for the Rochester Yellowjackets with a 5.7 ERA.

4-26 - Drew Pfaff and the Fischer twins will be playing against each other in a big baseball promotion Monday night (5:30 p.m.) game at St. Cloud. For details check here.
4-16 - Nate Van Roekel was named Northern Sun Conferences baseball player of the week to cap an outstanding hitting spree. His exploits are detailed in the article posted in the sites general news column and just this click away.

4-13 - Nate Van Roekel tied two school records last Saturday as he helped lead the Winona State Warriors to a 35-6 win in Aberdeen, SD against Northern State. Nate hit 3 HRs and had 10 RBI in the 4th game of the series and help lead Winona to a 5-1 week. Nates 6 HRs on the year lead the NSIC. Kyle Fischer had another good outing on the hill for St Cloud. Kyle pitched 5.0 innings giving up no runs, 4 hits with 6 Ks. His 2.08 ERA is 5 in the NSIC behind 2 of his St Cloud teammates. Garrett Fischer continues to be the DH for the Huskies who went 1-1 this week against Bemidji. Garretts 9 doubles rank him 7th in the conference.

Trisha Johnson at St Benedicts pitched well, 6 innings, 5 hits, 1ER, however Carlton came back to beat St Benedicts in 8 innings on Wednesday. Logan Ahlness continues to rack up playing time for the Bethel Royals. She has played in 20 of 28 games and is currently hitting .300.

Katie Larson is hitting .253 for the U of Sioux Falls. Katie has been mostly playing SS but has also seen some action in the outfield.

Hayley Hornick is at Central Lakes playing softball. She is hitting .290 through 9 games with 2 2Bs and 9 runs scored. Kasey Bode is pitching for Rochester CTC. She has appeared in 18 games with 38 innings, 38 Ks and is 2-5 on the year.

Teammates Zach Fischer and Jason Shaul both had big weeks for Ridgewater leading them to a 4-0 record last week. Zach went 7-13 with a double, triple and HR with 10 runs scored in those 4 games. Zach raised his batting average to .273 on year. Jason was equally as hot going 6-11 with 2 doubles, triple and HR. Jason leads the team with a .438 batting average and 13 RBI.

4.-3 - In womans softball, NU grad Trisha Johnson was named Blazer Athlete of the Week at St Benedicts after she pitched a 7 inning complete game shutout over Macalester 1-0 giving up 5 hits with 3ks. She improved her record to 5-3. She follwed that performance up with another 7 inning complete game against St Olaf. She gave up 1 earnined run but took the loss in the 3-1 game.

Teammates Laura Holm and Morgan Zollner are carrying big bats for the Iowa Lakes softball team. Laura has improved her batting average to .265 with 7RBI while Morgan is tearing it up with a .396 batting average with 8RBI, both players have 4 2Bs.

Katie Larson, playing softball at U of Sioux Falls is hitting .262 with 9 RBI and 1 HR, she has stolen 2 bases and scored 12 runs.

4-3 - New ulm graduates continue to do well in the Nothern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) for their repsective teams. Nate Van Roekel helped Winona to a 3-3 record last week, going 8-24 with 8 runs scored, 1HR, 2 2B. Nate is hitting .324 on the year with 3HRs.

Garrett and Kyle Fischer played big roles in St Cloud going 4-2 last week. Garrett went 8-20 with 6 runs scored, 5RBI, 5 2B, 1 3B. Garrett is currently hitting .348 and leads the team with 9 2Bs. In The first game of the weekend against Wayne State, Garretts second double of the game knocked in the winning run and help his younger brother Kyle pick up his 4th win of the year. Kyle pitched 6.2 innings, giving up 2 runs with 4 Ks. Kyle is now 4-1 with an ERA of 2.43.

At the junior college level Colton Petron of Rochester CTC is 2-2 in 14.1 IP with 10Ks. Ridgewater College has not updated their stats page since coming back from Florida, so Zach Fischers and Jason Shaol stats have not updated.

In the MIAC last week Aaron Pfaff and the St Johns baseball team were idle. Aaron is hitting .394 with 9RBI on the year. Colin Wendinger and St Thomas swept a 2 game set from Hamline. Colin did not appear in either game. Colin has made 3 appearances on the year, on a vary talented pitching staff, pitching 2.1 innings allowing 2 ERs, however he has yet to give up a hit.

3-29 - Wrapping up the winter sports; Korinne OConnor, a junior forward on the St Thomas womens hockey team finished the year with 7 goals (2nd on the team) and 5 assists. The Tommies finished 10-7-1 and in 3rd place in the MIAC.

Scott Hawhins, 6 foot 6 inch junior forward, played for the St Cloud Huskies, who finished 20-9 and in 3rd place in the NSIC standings. The team qualified for the NCAA Regional Tournament defeating Bemidji in the first game before bowing out of the tournament with a loss to Metro State College. Hawkins played in 25 of 29 games scoring 69 points on the year with 13 3-Pointers, and 27 rebounds.

3-29 - Sophomore Trisha Johnson pitched a complete game victory for St. Bens on Wednesday against St Catherines. She gave up 2 earned runs and struck out 5 to pickup her 3rd win of the year. Logan Ahlnass went 1-3 with 1 run scored and 1 RBI in a 13-3 Bethal loss to Gustavus. Logan is currently hitting .357 and is 4-4 in stolen bases. Katie Larson is hitting .257 with 1HR and 9RBI at Sioux Falls.

3-28 - New Ulm grads Nate Van Roekel, Kyle Fischer and Garrett Fischer played big roles in last weekends NSIC matchup between Winona State and St Cloud State. St Cloud took 3 of 4 from Winona. Van Roekel had the game winning double in Winonas only win and and hit .357 with 1 HR, 4 RBI on the weekend, starting all 4 games at 2B. Kyle Fischer pitched a complete game victory in game 3, going 7 innings, 2 Rs, 0 earned, 2 hits and 8Ks. Garrett Fischer played in all 4 games for St. Cloud, starting 2 games as DH, 1 in RF and PHing is the 4th game. Garrett was 2 for 9 with 2BB.

Aaron Pfaff was 2-5 for the St Johns Johnnies in a double header split with US Oshkosh on Monday. St. Johns starts conference play this weekend against Carlton.

Ridgewater College in Wilmar has posted their stats after the teams return from Florida. Jason Shaul is hitting .381, with a team leading 8 RBI, 1 HR, 2 2B in 8 games played. Colton Petron improved to 2-1 on the mound for Rochester CTC.

3-26 - Laura Holm and Morgan Zollner are playing softball for the Lakers of Iowa Lakes Community College. Both have played in all 10 games with Zollner leading the team in batting average, hits and RBIs; .417, 10, 8. In Saturdays first game of a doubleheader she was 3-3 with a double. Holm is currently hitting .190.

3-24 - Two New Ulm graduates recently competed in the Classic Golf Invitational golf event in Palm Dessert California. Samantha Bergmann (Minnesota State Mankato) shot a 165, tied for 6th overall, and helped lead MSU to a first place finish in the 9 team event while Katelyn Schwartz (Southwest Minnesota State) shot a 190. SWSU finished in 6th place.

Trisha Johnson is a sophomore pitcher at St Bens this spring. She is 3-2 with 30 IP and one shutout. Logan Ahlness is hitting .400 for the Bethal University Royals. The team is currently 5-9 and on their southern trip. Stats have not been updated since the team left.

3-21 - Nate Van Roekel at Winona has started all 11 games for the Warriors and is hitting .306 with 1HR and 4 RBI, Garrett and Kyle Fischer at St Cloud are helping the Huskies to early season national rankings and a 15-4 record. The Huskies have been ranked as high as 3rd in the nation in DII and are currently ranked 10th. Garrett is hitting .378 with 4 2Bs with 4 SB. Kyle is 2-1 with a 3.38 ERA in 5 appearances. Aaron Pfaff is a freshman at St Johns University and has started the last 9 games for the Johnnies. He is hitting .393 with 8 RBI and 4 stolen bases.

Katie Larson, after two successful seasons at Iowa Lakes JC, is now at the University of Sioux Falls and is batting .500 after 4 games. Colin Wendinger is a freshman at the University of St Thomas as a pitcher. He has made two appearances without allowing a base runner in 2 IP. Colton Petron continues his playing career at Rochester CTC. He 1-1 after two starts on the mound. Zach Fischer and Jason Shaul are playing at Ridgewater College in Willmar. Their webpage does not provide current stats. Brock Sieve, after playing baseball at Rochester CTC is now at Dakota Wesleyan and has made one mound appearance for the Tigers.

Paul Wyczawskis U of Texas-Tyler team is currenly 16-6.

3-4 - Coach Paul Wyczawski (NUHS) has U of Texas-Tyler baseball off to 12-3 start in spring games in Texas.
3-1 - Catching up: Baseball off and running. St. Cloud State is 9-1 with Fischer twins figuring in the wins. Kyle is 1-0 without allowing earned run in eight innings and striking out 8. Garrett is batting .375 with 3 rbi, two sacrifice hits and two stolen bases in the games at Metrodome. Also at Metrodome Nate Van Roeckel takes a .500 average with five hits in 10 at bats including two-run homer into left field bleachers. That Winona State team is headed for Florida.

2-6 - Grandpa Red Wyczawski has less miles to go now to watch granddaughter Lizzie Stenhaug play basketball. the 508 sophomore is one of the first off the bench for Mankato State. She played high school hoops for Century at Rochester.

2-1 - Kevin Larson scored 10 points to run his season total to 93 for Iowa Lakes College Tuesday night. He went 4-5 including his first three-pointer of the season in a 98-58 win over Dakota Wesleyns JV team. The New Ulm Cathedral graduate had seven assists, three steals and eight rebounds. For the season he is shooting 37 for 64 (58%) from the field and 18 for 30 free throws.

23 - Sophomore Aaron Schaper returned to basketball practice today at Luther, Onalaska, WI after emergency surgery for appendicitis. Jan. 17 he started his first game for the Knights (now 9-5) and two days later was taken from practice to the hospital for the surgery. His dads team Friday lost a close game to G-E-T which is one of Wisconsins leading ranked Division 3 team (11-0) and third highest in the whole state in RPI rankings. Westby (11-2) of Luthers Coulee conference is rated 12th. Elk Mound (near Eau Claire) who Luther lost to in the holiday tournament is now rated eighth in Division 4 where Luther is slated. Wisconsin is far ahead of Minnesota in reporting high school sports including state-wide stats. Visit the site listed at the right under high schools.

22 - Jamie Hoffmann missed grandpa Ambroses 80th birthday party Sunday and is having difficulty in recovering from from a virus picked up in Venezuela and isnt able walk as antibiotics do not seem to make any improvement in his condition. Back in New Ulm for his fathers funeral, (Jan. 22), Bruce mentioned that he expects that the Viking Stadium site issue will not be decided until after the elections.
Dec. 20, 2011 - Jim Bastian reported in the Journal that former New Ulmite Mike Zweifel has been named College footballs Division III winner of the John Gagliardi awards as the most outstanding player. He caught 140 passes for 1,915 yards and 25 touchdowns for the University of Dubuque. His father, head coach Stan, coached New Ulm High School from 1977 to 1980.

Dec. 17, 2011 - Brady Greenwaldt of New Ulm High School has verbally committed to play foot ball for Division II Northern State University according to New Ulm Journal which clarified an article that the information was received from New Ulm High School football coaches. He was 6-3, 295-pound three year starter for the Eagles.

Dec. 5, 2011 - Scott Hawkins of New Ulm High School has played in all six games for undefeated St. Cloud State University basketball , averaging five minutes per game. He is 7-10 with a 4-for-7 3-pt. shooting record.

Nov. 19, 2011 - MVL graduate Amanda Burkescored her second double-double of the young season as MLC won its first game Saturday at the St. Norbert, WI tournament. Also from MVL, the Danell brothers Justin and Josh along with Galen Holzhueter are figuring strongly so far for Martin Luther College mens basketball in that teams season openers.

Nov. 18, 2011 - St. Cloud State University has landed another Zak Hoffmann for its baseball program. The spelling of Zak is correct. This Hoffmann is from Shakopee where he was a starting shortstop since his freshman year and an all conference selection in football. There may be some confusion on the roster since he joins New Ulms Zach Hoffmann. MVL graduate Brandon Smith was named to the Great Plains all conference team and established rushing records in his junior season this year. For full story, Check here

Zak Hoffman has been the starting shortstop at Shakopee High School since his freshmen season. He has also been a three year starter as a running back and linebacker on his high school football team and three year starter in hockey. Zak hit an impressive .395 last year in high school baseball and .487 in American Legion with a combined nine home runs. Coach Jack Dolan said he was heavily recruited by many schools, including some of our top NSIC rivals and some DI schools. He’s a great all-around athlete that we feel will be a true power hitting, middle of the order hitter for us.

Nov. 15, 2011 - Peter (Pete) Schwarz is a sophomore transfer from Southwest University at St. Johns, Collegeville. He is listed on the roster as an outside linebacker at 6-4 and 285. He is a 2009 graduate of New Ulm Cathedral and the son of Joel and Kathleen Schwarz.

Nov. 8, 2011 - Haley Hornick has earned second team all-conference honors at Central Lakes College, Brainerd, and some nice praise from her coach Jane Peterson as well. Jane commented on Hornicks play this season: Haley was a great surprise to our team this season. She played in every single set and worked her way into the libero position early in the season. Her defensive instinct is great and she gradually and continuously improved her ball control and defensive positioning as the season progressed - something every coach would love every player to do! She was a key ingredient to our impressive serve receive that was never rattled. She will continue to work on her defensive posture, and movement, and her confidence so that next year she can have an even bigger impact! Haley was a 2011 Second Team All Northern Division selection. We finished the season 16-10, 11-3 in the Northern Division - in second place. We lost in the semi finals of our region tournament on October 28th.

Oct. 29, 2011 - Courteney Steinhauser is a junior cog on the Minnesota State University-Mankato volleyball team. Search at left for object 1601 for details. Oh ... and we have to send kudos to son Blair Schaper (Luther Academy, New Ulm) whose Wisconsin Lutheran high schools girls cross country finished fifth in the Wisconsin state meet Saturday and the boys team won it all. Blairs girls have been a power in section by winning first or second for nine straight years and regularly finishing five times in the top five at the state where he has two state champion runner-ups.

Oct 28, 2011 - Samantha Bergmann continues to lead Minnesota State University-Mankato women golfers with a 77.6 average for 20 rounds. Second on team is 82.4. Finished four times in top five and is shooting six over par. Brad Portner at Willmar Community, has played in five football games and recorded four solo tackles and four assists.

Oct. 25, 2011 - New Ulms Scott Hawkins is carried as a 6-6 junior on St. Cloud State Universitys basketball team. Last year as a sophomore he played 182 minutes, scoring 68 and getting 39 rebounds. His best point game was 17 against Upper Iowa late in the season...When Wisconsin Luther High School (WISCO) sends its girls cross country team to the Wisconsin state championships Saturday, it will be 9th consecutive year Coach Blair Schaper has qualified a team for the big run. He has been track coordinator and girls cross country coach there for 10 years after previously coaching and teaching at New Berlins Star of Bethlehem Lutheran school.

Oct. 6, 2011 - New Ulm High School grad Zach Hoffmann rapped out a couple of key doubles in the St. Cloud State University inter-squad World Series. Playing for the white team, he had a key double that prompted his teams coach Nate Hammes to comment, We got a huge hit from Zach Hoffmann that really broke open the game for us. In the first game of the series he gave his team an 8-4 lead with a bases loaded double.

Sept. 23, 2011 - Last years basketball roster at St. Cloud State University included Scott Hawkins of New Ulm High School. He was listed as a 6-6 sophomore. Current roster has not been announced.

Adam Dauer is listed on the Willmar Ridgewater (Junior) College wrestling roster while Brad Portner is carried with the football team listing as a freshman linebacker at 6-2 and 215 pounds. Samantha Bergmann, NUHS, is a senior at Minnesota State-Mankato and leads the womens team with a 76 average, six strokes ahead of #2 golfer. Early in the 2011 fall season, she was named womens golfer of the week for the Northern Sun Conference.
