15 - Luther High School at Onalaska, WI recorded its sixth Coulee Conference win Tuesday to remain undefeated in this predominantly division 3 conference. Luther is a Division 4 school coached by MVL and MLC graduate Brad Schaper of New Ulm. Luther has a 13-1 record going into Monday Night's game (Jan. 21) against Division 4 Whitehall (9-3) at home. Schaper's son Aaron, a 6-0 junior, is in his second year as a starter. Luther lost in the section championship a year ago and won four games in the conference last year, it's best finish ever in the Coulee.

4 - Clayton Rust, grandson of the Marv Meihacks of New Ulm, made the trip to the Rose Bowl with Wisconsin. He is a 6-5 freshman quarterback who played for Shoreland Lutheran in the Racine/Kenosha area. His father married Anne Meihack.

5 - New Ulm Journal named several New Ulm players to the 2012 All-Journal football team. Tevin Mooter of New Ulm, Tyler Mielke of MVL and Jeff Osborne were named to the defensively. Adam Schnobrich of New Ulm Cathedral was the lone offense player. No honorable mentions were announced.

20 - MILWAUKEE - Wisconsin Lutheran's girls cross country team qualified for its 10th straight state meet Thursday, finishing second in the sectional. It is the ninth straight year the team, coached by former New Ulmite Blair Schaper, was first or second in the sectional. Junior Aaron Schaper of Onalaska Lutheran, son of Brad, ranked fourth in the Wisconsin Coulee conference in pass receptions with 17 and seventh in yards gained passing received. It was his second year in the top five of the conference for receptions.

19 - New Ulm area teams did not fair well in state tournament appearances over the weekend with the New Ulm Brewers losing Friday and Searles Bullheads dropping into the loser's bracket by coming up short in two tough-luck losses. See the Scoreboard Scoreboard for links to details.

15 - The #9 seeded Searles Bullheads will begin the 32-team 2012 MSMABA state tournament Saturday evening at 5 p.m. at Lonsdale vs the Waconia Islanders, the #8 seed. Bullheads will then play again Sunday at either 1p.m. in the A bracket or 3 p.m. in the AA bracket at Veseli in the second round.

13 - New Ulm's Fischer twins both pitched Monday in a Willmar Northwoods playoff game loss to Mankato Moon Dogs. Kyle Fischer (St. Cloud State) allowed three runs on five hits in two relief innings, while his twin brother Garrett Fischer (St. Cloud State) allowed the final run in the ninth.

6 - New Ulm's Kyle Fischer (4-2)lost a Northwoods League regular season game Monday after Alexandria scored nine runs on 11 hits in 4.2 innings against the right-hander from St. Cloud State.

29 - New Ulm Legion gold captured the second district title with two wins over Sleepy Eye Sunday, the last 11-0. At New Ulm Shakopee qualified for the state VFW tournament by beating Dassel-Cokato 14-2.

26 - Ali Bernard elevated to Olympic team status for 2012 due to a doping ban given to the current top ranked athlete. The New Ulm Journal report is linked here.

21 - New Ulm's Kyle Fischer, working on a 30-day contract for the Willmar Stingers of the Northwoods League, had a rough outing Thursday against St. Cloud. He didn't get a decision in a short effort that lasted for 3 2/3 innings during which time he gave up three runs two hits, walked 2and hit an amazing 5 batters which must be some sort of Northwoods record.

20 - Two freshman and a sophomore were named to represent New Ulm High School and a freshman for New Ulm Cathedral on the New Ulm Journal's All-Area golf boys and girls teams of 12 persons. Honored were: Corine McKeeth, NUHS, and Brooke Dummer, Cathedral and Jonah Cooper and Kelton Schmitz, NUHS....Journal also reported Jared Zuhlsdorf scoring a hole-in-one June 17 at New Ulm Country Club.

19 - All-Conference honors in the south Central were announced Monday with New Ulm Eagles putting Chase Meyer, Tim Kehren, Brody Peterson and Matt Bergmann on the team. Judd Davis was honorable mention. The same NUJ article indicated Davis, Meyer, Peterson and Kehren were named to the all-Section team.

19 - University of Dubuque has made an official release regarding Paul Wyczawski's acceptance of the head coaching position there.

17 - All-Conference for Tomahawk announced today included five members of New Ulm Cathedral and three from Minnesota Valley Lutheran. Cathedral selections included Lisa Helget, Paige Pautzke, Amy Eckstein, Ann Schwarz and Karlee Pfaff. Kristi Larson was honorable mention. Carlie Maasz, Emily Wessel and Mikyla Weilage along with honorable mention Charlotte Pfingsten were named from MVL.

15 - Searles Bullheads hope to finally get in another game Sunday after a series of postponements has caused a revision in the team schedule. Four postponements were postponed leaving the May 20 4-1 win at Edina the only completed official game. The Bullheads will hos Faribault at 3 p.m. Sunday at Searles.

11 - New Ulm's Paul Wyczawski will return "north" to take over the baseball program at Division III Dubuque University in Iowa. He has been coaching for 20 years in the "south" and finishes a successful stint at University of Texas-Tyler. Although no official announcement has been made, a TV station at Dubuque and the newspaper there repeated a story posted on the UT-Tyler website that he had been offered the vacant coaching position and that he had accepted. University of Dubuque policy requires having the signed contract in hand before making an official announcement. 9- Ben Wolf, Jordan Guggisberg, Dan Blackstad and Pat Bock represented New Ulm Cathedral on the Section 2A All-Section baseball team.

8 - Ben Wolf, Erich Prokosch and Dan Blackstad of New Ulm Cathedral and Travis Kretsch and Justin Bruns of Minnesota Valley Lutheran were selected for Tomahawk All-Conference baseball honors. Honorable mentions went to Ryan Grunke, MVL, and Drew Pfaff, NUC.

6 - Alan Woitas today was announced as the new athletic director for New Ulm Cathedral, replacing the retiring John Vetter.

5 - New Ulm Cathedral lost two games (2-1 and 4-0) to BOLD in the Section 2A baseball championship games to end its season as the sectional runner-up.

31 - Morris/Chokio-Alberta pitcher Sam Mattson won his ninth game and the Tigers won their 11th in a row with a 7-1 victory over Fairmont in the Section 3AA winners bracket semifinal Thursday. The Tigers (15-6), the No. 2 seed from the North Subsection, advance to play New Ulm, the South’s No. 2 seed, at noon Saturday in Marshall. Willmar Tribune. ... Garrett Fischer, playing for the Mankato Moondogs, had an RBI single in a 4-1 Northwoods League win over Willmar Stingers Thursday...The Prior Lake Mariners have requested the Searles Bullheads to postpone Sunday's 2:00 p.m. game in Searles postponed to a later date. Prior Lake cited too many conflicts and shortage of players. The Bullheads travel to Union Hill next Friday evening (June 8) ... A won the 3AA championship with a 10-innign 10-9 win over Pipestone. ... New Ulm Cathedral also moved to the state tournament with a 4-2 win over Mankato Loyola at Mankato...Also at Mankato, the Cathedral baseball team reached the 2A championship by beating BOD 4-1.

24 - New Ulm Cathedral blanked Minnesota Valley Lutheran 2-0 in Section 2A playoff action at Johnson Park Friday. It was the 'Hounds fourth straight win and seventh shut-out of the season from its pitching staff.

24 - Robert Reinhart, long-time New Ulm Baseball Association and Brown County Agricultural Society financial officer and director, faces 16 felony counts after an investigation by NewUlm police department was made public in today's New Ulm Journal. 19 - Tomahawk Conference announced its All-Academic teams for 2012 including the following from MVL. New Ulm Cathedral does not recommend students-athletes to academic honors. MVL boys: Sam dose, Ryan Plath, Zachary Scharlemann, Justin Steffl, Daniel Stelljes, Matthew Tessmer. MVL girls: Martha Balge, Alicia Evenson, Tali Otto, Laura Schoenherr, Mariah Stein. Selection requires varsity participation for sophomores-Seniors with GPA of 3.75 or higher.

19 - Jim Bastian reported in his column that Catehdral's tie for softball championship in the conference was its 20th championship in the last 24 years and 11th in the last 12 seasons. Coach Bob Mertz now posts a 33-year record of 666-120.

18 - A press release published by New Ulm Journal reports Kristen Forstner and Jill Gareis of New Ulm High School have been named to the Thunder team for the 24th annual Minnesota High School All-Star series starting June 10 at Mankato. Another release from Minnesota University-Mankato reported New Ulm's Samantha Bergmann was named to the Capital One Academic All-District 7 at-large squad for her athletic and academic success. She advances to national competition for Academic All American honors. Selectees must be at least a sopohomore and carry a minimum 3.30 grade point average. Samantha was also All-Northern Sun conference this spring. Last winter she was named NIC senior strudent athlete Myles Brand Award for those on track to graduate and have a GPA of 3.75 or higher.

17 - In the College Division 2 Central Region tournament at Mankato, Garrett Fischer was 3 for 3 with a run and RBI as St. Cloud topped Winona State 12-7. Fellow New Ulmite Nate Van Roekel hit his 12th home run of the season for Winona to tie the game in the seventh New Mexico Highlands beat Colorado Mesa 2-0 in the opening game with Minnesota State-Mankato edging Regis University in a 10-inning the night game 1-0.

17 - Willmar Stingers of the Northwoods League season roster has been announced and includes New Ulm's Kyle Fischer, a 5-3 sophomore at St. Cloud State. Other pitchers on the staff hail from Century College,Evansville, University of San Francisco, Kansas, University of Nevada, Scottsdale Community College and Southern Utah University. Fischer earlier had signed a 30-day contract which allows him to still play amateur baseball if he plays enough games to qualify per play-off rules.

13 - Minnesota State-Mankato received the #1 seed and will host the Central Regional Division 2 baseball tournament starting Thursday featuring three Minnesota schools against a field including Regis of the Rocky Mountain conference, Colorado Mesa and New Mexico Highlands. St. Cloud State drew #5 seed Winona State which won the tournament in 2011 and went all the way to the national championship game.

3 - Tomahawk League East will open the 2012 amateur baseball season with a full slate of Sunday afternoon games this week. Five games are set for 2 p.m. Essig is at New Ulm Brewers, Hanska at Sleepy Eye, Searles at Springfield, Stark at Lamberton, Leavenworth at St. James in 2 p.m. starts while Gibbon plays at Redwood Falls for a 3 p.m. contest.

2 - The son of Stan Zwiefel, former New Ulm High School football coach, is being given a tryout with the Wisconsin Packers as one of 30 non drafted and non selected free agents invited to the NFL team. 24 - Martin Luther College's Jacob Zeil is UMAC pitcher of week. Ziel pitched in one game last week for MLC, throwing his first career shutout in a 1-0 win over North Central. He allowed just four hits in seven innings, striking out seven on the way to picking up his first win of the season. Details via MLC

4 - Shane Heiderscheidt has resigned as New Ulm High School basketball coach after three seasons. In three years his teams had an 18-59 record. In 2011-12 New Ulm was 5-20.

31 - New Ulm Journal sports writers selected four New Ulm players to its all-Journal basketball team for 2011-2012. Honored were Nate Siemers, Minnesota Valley Lutheran, first time; Brian Nosbush, New Ulm Cathedral, second team; and Ben Wolf, Cathedral and Andy Hawkins, Cathedral, third team. KT Farasyn received honorable mention.

27 - KNUJ Player of the Year for winter sports were announced at the annual banquet. Honors went to Jacob Anderson. River Valley, wrestling; Joey Bartlett, St. Peter, and Katy Kuiper, St. Peter, basketball and Beau Herring, Mountain Lake/Butterfield-Odin, boy's basket ball.

23 - The Journal's all-area girl's basketball team for 2012 included two New Ulm players on the second team plus one honorable mention. Named were Kelsy Kannegiesser of New Ulm High School and Marian Schoof of MVL. Anna Munsen of MVL was given honorable mention. The Journal noted New Ulm Cathedral did not submit nominations, apparently a nomination being a qualification for consideration to selection. Journal sports writers make the selection with the highest vote getters being named to the teams.

19 - Denver Rockies today released outfielder Jamie Hoffmann which made the New Ulm outfielder a free agent and eligible to sign elsewhere. Troy Renckhe writing for the Denver News, reported that the Rockies "made a minor roster move. Outfielder Jamie Hoffman took his outright and became a free agent today, according to a source. Colorado liked him over the winter, believing he had a shot to make the team out of camp. But he was slowed by an illness contracted in winter ball, and struggled in the early games."

28 - MLC women's basketball player Erica Babinec was named UMAC Player of the Year Tuesday, and was also voted First Team All-UMAC for the fourth time in her career. Forward Amanda Burk received Second Team All-UMAC honors. For full story and connecting links link up here

26- Arlington was one of the winners (Division 1, Boys) in the annual Lutheran grade school tournament at MLC this weekend. Other champions included Mt. Calvary-Lacrosse, division 1 girls; Cross Christ-Coon Rapids, division 2 girls; St. Paul-Menomonie, division 2 boys. 26 - Wisconsin has two excellent high school state-wide sports websites full of stuff and stats. See the links under "high schools" in the right-hand column. The state high school league (WIAA) is the second of the two sites.

20 - Martin Luther College's baseball team was picked to finish seventh of eight teams in the UMAC preseason poll voted on by the coaches around the conference. The Knights finished sixth in the conference in 2011 with a record of 7-23 overall and 7-14 in league play. For the full story and poll stats, click here

19 - Teams from three states competed in the annual MLC tournament for Lutheran elementery schools in four divisions this past weekend. This activity was for the larger schools of the Wisconsin Synod affiliations. the coming weekend will bring in the smaller schools.

2-1 - Kevin Larson scored 10 points to run his season total to 93 for Iowa Lakes College Tuesday night. He went 4-5 including his first three-pointer of the season in a 98-58 win over Dakota Wesleyn's JV team. The New Ulm Cathedral graduate had seven assists, three steals and eight rebounds. For the season he is shooting 37 for 64 (58%) from the field and 18 for 30 free throws.

23 - Sophomore Aaron Schaper returned to basketball practice today at Luther, Onalaska, WI after emergency surgery for appendicitis. Jan. 17 he started his first game for the Knights (now 9-5) and two days later was taken from practice to the hospital for the surgery. His dad's team Friday lost a close game to G-E-T which is one of Wisconsin's leading ranked Division 3 team (11-0) and third highest in the whole state in RPI rankings. Westby (11-2) of Luther's Coulee conference is rated 12th. Elk Mound (near Eau Claire) who Luther lost to in the holiday tournament is now rated eighth in Division 4 where Luther is slated. 22 - Jamie Hoffmann missed grandpa Ambrose's 80th birthday party Sunday and is having difficulty in recovering from from a virus picked up in Venezuela and isn't able walk as antibiotics do not seem to make any improvement in his condition. Back in New Ulm for his father's funeral, (Jan. 22), Bruce mentioned that he expects that the Viking Stadium site issue will not be decided until after the elections.

13 - Bruce Lambrecht, former New Ulmite, tells NUSC that the sports and entertainment corridor (known as the Market site) is "hanging in there" as one of the sites for a future Viking stadium. Bruce was instrumental in developing the Target field baseball site for the Twins. A report in the news media Monday indicated that site is no longer being considered. He mentioned that he expects that the Viking Stadium site issue will not be decided until after the elections.

11 - The Tomahawk East amateur baseball league will hold its' Annual Meeting Sunday, January 29, 2012, at 2:00 p.m. at the Railway Bar & Grill in Sleepy Eye. The question of re-admitting the New Ulm Brewers back into the league will be on the agenda.
